Choose ADT cameras by deciding whether you want a Nest camera for basic Google Home viewing or cameras connected to an ADT system and its camera service. The camera hardware is only part of that choice. ADT platform compatibility, linked accounts, power at the installation point, and the required video plan determine what you can view, record, and share.

Quick decision: For basic standalone viewing, evaluate the exact Google Nest camera and its included recording limits. For ADT integration, first identify your ADT platform and request a written camera, monitoring, storage, and installation quote. Existing Command or Pulse owners should verify named model support before adding equipment.
This guide compares current documented US camera families and service requirements. It does not claim hands-on testing or assume every older ADT camera can migrate into the same app.

Start with your service path
ADT's current camera page lists Google Nest indoor wired, outdoor wired, battery indoor/outdoor, and floodlight camera families. That does not make all purchases or account arrangements equivalent. A direct Google camera setup and an ADT-linked camera system involve different service decisions. Source: ADT camera range.
| Your goal | Starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Check a Nest camera live in Google Home | Basic direct Google camera operation | Exact model's included history and account setup |
| Manage ADT and Nest cameras in one place | Supported ADT+ arrangement | Google Home account linkage and required camera service |
| Add a camera to ADT Command or Pulse | Named-model compatibility check | Exact camera, platform, app workflow, and service terms |
| Review a continuous timeline | Eligible camera, continuous power, and recording tier | Hardware power and subscription requirements together |
| Replace an existing ADT service arrangement | Review the existing agreement first | Equipment obligations, account access, and post-change features |
Google says camera live streams remain available in the app regardless of camera model or subscription. That establishes a basic direct-camera path; it does not promise that canceling an ADT contract automatically releases every camera or account from existing obligations. Source: Google video-history guidance.
For ADT+ integration, ADT states that notifications, remote control, streaming, and recording require working internet and Wi-Fi, a Google Account, and the Google Home app linked to ADT+. Resolve those dependencies before comparing an equipment-only price with a complete service quote. Source: ADT+ app requirements.
Match the camera family to power and placement
ADT's model names include generation details that matter. Its indoor wired third-generation and outdoor wired second-generation Nest cameras are listed with 2K HDR and night vision. The battery model and floodlight block should not inherit those new wired-model specifications simply because they appear on the same page. Source: ADT camera descriptions.
| Camera family listed by ADT | Documented distinction | Appropriate buying question |
|---|---|---|
| Nest Cam Indoor, wired third generation | Wired indoor camera; 2K HDR and night vision | Is there suitable power at the intended indoor location? |
| Nest Cam Outdoor, wired second generation | Wired outdoor camera; 2K HDR; listed IP65 resistance | Can its supported power and mounting route reach the coverage point? |
| Nest Cam, outdoor or indoor, battery | Battery-powered; listed IP54 resistance | Will battery operation meet the desired recording pattern? |
| Nest Cam with floodlight | Named motion-activated floodlight camera | Does the exact installation fit the location and service plan? |
The IP54 and IP65 labels above are the ratings ADT publishes, not a promise that either unit can be installed anywhere or exposed beyond its manual's limits. The floodlight entry is a separate product family; this guide does not assign it the newer wired cameras' 2K generation. Source: ADT camera range.
ADT also qualifies 2K availability by network strength and requires connectivity of at least 3.3 Mbps. Treat that as a documented prerequisite, not a guarantee of performance at a distant mounting point. Check the intended location and supported installation before assuming that a strong connection beside the router proves coverage outside.
Indoor security cameras should be positioned around the room's viewing and privacy needs as well as nearby power. Outdoor security cameras need the same deliberate check of coverage, mounting access, and the supported supply route. Choosing “wireless” does not settle whether a camera needs continuous power for the recording mode you want.
Separate included previews from a retained timeline
For direct Google use, the newest listed wired Nest Cam Indoor third generation and Outdoor second generation provide up to six hours of event previews without a subscription, with clips up to ten seconds. Nest Cam battery has an included three-hour event-history window. These are different viewing limits, not a common promise of all-day saved footage. Source: Google history comparison.
An event-history window lets you return to detected activity within the supported period. Continuous history provides a broader timeline, including intervals that are not represented by a triggered event clip. Decide which of those jobs you need before purchasing a camera or upgrading a plan.
ADT's Complete Monitoring page includes 30 days of stored clips with Nest Aware. Its separate Nest Aware page describes 30-day event history and an expanded Nest Aware Plus route with up to 60 days of events and ten days of continuous history on eligible cameras. The service covers the home's Nest cameras rather than charging a separate full plan for each additional camera. Sources: ADT monitoring plans, ADT Nest Aware.
Power remains a separate condition. Google states that Nest Cam battery must be connected to a power source for 24/7 history. Running it on battery leaves event history even with the advanced direct recording tier. Paying for an expanded plan does not turn battery operation into continuous recording. Source: Google recording requirements.
For example, assume you want to review an entire overnight period outside. A battery-only installation plus a more expensive recording plan does not satisfy that requirement on Nest Cam battery. You need a supported continuous-power arrangement and an eligible recording tier, or a different researched camera choice.
Keep partner Nest Aware separate from direct Google billing
Google's direct service is now called Google Home Premium. Google explicitly says Nest Aware subscriptions purchased through home-security partners have not changed. ADT's partner Nest Aware descriptions therefore should not be silently replaced by direct Google plan names or prices. Source: Google subscription guidance.
Ask who supplies and bills the recording service, which tier is included, and how an upgrade is handled. If a quote already includes partner Nest Aware, do not assume a separate direct subscription is also needed. Conversely, an existing direct subscription is not proof that it satisfies every ADT package requirement.
ADT's current monitoring page identifies Complete Monitoring for systems with cameras and Smart Monitoring for systems with smart devices but no cameras. Its camera-page familiar-face features require Nest Aware, included in the required Complete Monitoring plan, plus compatible devices. Keep those dependencies attached to the feature rather than treating a camera purchase as automatic entitlement. Sources: ADT monitoring plans, ADT camera footnotes.
Security cameras without a subscription should be compared by retained recordings and included access, not just the absence of a monthly camera bill. That distinction helps decide whether the basic direct Nest path is enough for your household.
Existing Command and Pulse owners: confirm the named model
An official ADT support result identifies Nest Cam Indoor wired third generation for ADT Command and ADT Pulse and explicitly lists those two systems as compatible. That is narrow evidence for a named model. It does not establish that every camera family works with both platforms, that old cameras migrate automatically, or that each app presents an identical experience. Source: ADT named-model compatibility result.
Before adding a camera, give ADT the exact system name, camera model, and existing app. Ask where live video and saved clips will appear, which account must own the camera, and whether a service change is required. Have the answer attached to the equipment quote.
If the intended change involves an older ADT-native or Blue camera, request a separate exact-model determination. The documentation used here does not establish a general conversion procedure or a support end date for those devices. Avoid replacing working equipment based only on a broad claim that old cameras are either unsupported or permanently compatible.
Understand viewing, verification, and household access
ADT+ is advertised as a way to access the ADT system and Nest cameras in one place, with the linked Google Home requirements described above. ADT's Nest Aware page also directs users to Google Home for viewing, downloading, and sharing recorded event clips. Identify both workflows during setup so a household member knows where to find a missed event. Sources: ADT+, ADT Nest Aware.
ADT describes an optional video-verification arrangement in which the customer permits camera information to be used when an alarm triggers. Its monitoring page describes viewing live feeds and allowing ADT access for verification. This is a permission and service choice to understand; it is not proof that every camera is watched continuously or that an emergency response is guaranteed. Source: ADT monitoring and verification explanation.
During handover, review which household members can access cameras, what information is shared for verification, and how the intended clip-review process works. Frame cameras deliberately, especially indoors, and discuss the view with the people who live there. Account access and camera placement should both reflect the household's actual needs.
Request a quote you can compare
ADT lists self-installation through ADT+ instructions, virtual assistance, and professional installation. Items marked Pro Install Only require professional installation. Confirm the route for each exact item rather than assuming a battery or wired label determines who can install it. Source: ADT installation choices.
Ask for these lines in a dated written quote:
- Exact camera models, generations, quantities, and required compatible equipment.
- Hardware payment terms, including any outstanding equipment obligation.
- Installation and any required power or mounting work.
- Required camera monitoring and the included partner recording tier.
- Any optional expanded event or continuous-history charge.
- The supported apps, linked accounts, and household access arrangement.
- Contract length, renewal terms, and what changes if service ends.
For a basic standalone hardware comparison, search Amazon for Google Nest Cam Indoor wired third generation. Confirm the exact model and seller terms. Buying a Nest camera from a retailer does not establish ADT integration, a monitoring subscription, or a particular installation package.
Choose the direct Google route when its verified basic viewing and recording limits match your needs. Choose an ADT-linked camera arrangement when the confirmed platform, service, recording, and installation terms provide the workflow you want. For either route, make the final decision from the exact model and written requirements rather than the ADT name or “wireless” label alone.
